The Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), a conglomerate of political parties that merged to forge a common front, is not taking the forthcoming elections for granted. The Party has issued a caveat that it will resist attempt by anyone to cheat during the process.
The National Chairman Nathaniel McGill warned that cheating from the National Elections Commission or anyone against the CDC will be resisted in the highest term. Though the CDC’s chairman did not state what prompted the warning and he did not say how the party intends to deal with any speculations, partisans of the CDC are known for ferociously protesting in major streets and sometimes bringing the city to a standstill.
McGill said on July 1st at the CDC headquarters in Monrovia that the Party will not accept anything from the Jerome George Korkoya Commission, but a must win in favor of the coalition The comment received a huge applause from supporters and partisans.
The Coalition, comprising George Weah’s Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), the National Patriotic Party of 50-year war crimes convict Charles Taylor and the Liberia People Democratic Party of former Speaker Alex Tyler, indicted with economic crimes is not willing to accept anything but victory.
McGill indicated that of the 26 registered political parties, only the CDC can defeat the ruling Unity Party face down in one round. The 1986 Liberian Constitution states, for political party or independent candidate to be declared winner, that group shall obtain 50 percent of the votes cast plus one vote.
“CDC will whip the Unity Party on clean sheet victory,” McGill said, arousing partisans and supporters. He added that the CDC is putting all might, resources, and energy into the electoral process to ensure one-round victory.
Former President Charles Taylor1997 won elections here on one round shot. President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf who is enjoying her second terms as president here always won on runoff elections, McGill asserted.
According to him, since the establishment of the CDC, the party has never seriously engaged into political campaign, but the 2017 elections the CDC is sufficiently prepared for every aspect of the political campaign in order to secure first round victory.
He pointed out that CDC has already brought into the country its campaign materials, including more than over 35 brand new Nissan Patrol Jeeps and 300 motorbikes, and there are more cars and motorbikes to come in the near future.
