UNMIL Press Release
The Inter-Religious Council of Liberia (IRCL) has commended the UN Mission he spearheaded in Liberia (UNMIL) and the Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations, Farid Zarif, for the great work and successful mission in Liberia.
A release quotes the President of the inter-faith organization, Bishop Dr. Kortu K. Brown as saying, as the UNMIL SRSG Zarif departs Liberia on Saturday, March 24, 2018, the people of Liberia wish him well in future endeavors as he continues to serve the people of the world through the United Nations.
Bishop Dr. Brown said in the release issued over the weekend in Monrovia, the Inter Religious Council is mainly grateful to the departing UNMIL boss due to his selfless service to Liberia under some of the most difficult circumstances. The IRCL observed that keeping and sustaining peace entail high magnitude of sacrifices, which Mr. Zarif ensured was achieved by UNMIL forces.
The religious group said, it is deeply gratified with what it calls the great deal of achievements the peace-keeping force made in restoring peace and tranquility to Liberia, Africa’s oldest independent republic once ravaged by nearly two decades of Civil War.
Bishop Dr. Brown further noted in the release that the Inter Religious Council is also particularly thankful to the UNMIL Head for ensuring that the UN Mission’s many quick impact projects positively impacted vital sectors of the Country including the provision of basic infrastructure such as schools, clinics, Town-halls, bridges, box culverts, among others.
The IRCL release concludes by urging Liberian security forces to demonstrate leadership in maintaining the nearly 15 years uninterrupted peace UNMIL significantly helped sustained. The inter-faith organization also wants Liberian beneficiaries of UNMIL’s skills training, mentorship and community empowerment initiatives make the most use of the knowledge acquired as the mission ends its mandate this month.
Established since 1990, IRCL is a religious body comprising Liberians from the Muslim and Christian faiths that have continued to promulgate messages of peace, love, transparency and accountability in Liberia.
Bishop Brown stated that UNMIL’s significant contributions to restoring peace to Liberia are not in any small measure especially through education, health, rule of law, women and youth empowerment as well as gender equity.
“Your Excellency SRSG, under your leadership, groups such as ours, made its presence felt on the national stage by keeping peace we needed to work under a conducive atmosphere. As an advocacy organization, we know that our voices would have mattered the most when we worked together with intervention forces, mainly UNMIL, to ensure that we all were on the same page of moving forward positively.” Bishop Dr. Kortu Brown said.
